IF YOU’RE DOIN’ IT, You Might as well be Doin’ It NYC Style
It’s the summer. So, if you’re going to be doin’ it; you might as well be doin’ it NYC style. I’m talking about pickup basketball. This time of year, the sweltering heat has ballers and fans flocking to their nearest courts for some entertaining pickup action. There’s more than a hundred street basketball courts across NYC, but none probably more famous than the Rucker Park; which is currently in the middle of its tournament season.
The Rucker just like many of the other courts across the five boroughs is one of the toughest stages for any baller to show just how mean their game is. And, if your skills have yet to be tested ‘in the park’ then your game probably hasn’t really arrived. Just last year, Oklahoma City Thunder’s Kevin Durant scored 66 buckets in The Rucker. This year, he made it to the NBA Finals! I’m sayin’!
Now, all the liveliness of street ball is caught on tape in a new documentary currently being screened called “Doin’ It In The Park: Pickup- Basketball, NYC”. The film is co directed by Kevin Couliau and Bobbito Garcia both streetballers themselves. It features interviews with Julius “Dr. J” Erving, Kenny Anderson, “Pee Wee” Kirkland and Kenny Smith to name a few. I recently spoke with Bobbito about his drive behind doing the film. “To me, it was in front of everyone’s face. It’s the most common denominator. It’s the foundation for the sport. So, we were lucky in that it was unprecedented.”
